  1. Drain the juice through the soft eye or fit an elastic band on the nut if you want to save the juice.

  2. Load the nut by pulling up the mechanism far enough to fit it in, and ensure that the blade is central on the top of the nut.

  3. Stand the Cocosplit in a suitable dish and hold it steady with one hand.

  4. Strike the cap with a suitable hammer or mallet.

  5. Proceed with processing of the half nuts and juice that you now have.

The Cocosplit nutcracker is designed to enable the nut to be split with one firm blow from a large hammer. Hold the frame steady while striking the chisel mechanism, or attach the base-plate to a board with the screws supplied.

A 1350 gram (3 pound) lump hammer is good but a smaller hammer or a wooden mallet will work with a vigorous blow to the cap of the splitter. Remember, this is the world’s largest nut that you are opening and some nuts have thicker shell than others! The juice can be saved by pre-draining, or by standing the Cocosplit in a small bucket or plastic dish.

Wrapping a stout elastic band wrapped around the nut avoids loss of juice and restrains the half nuts from “exploding” out of the dish. When the Cocosplit is screwed to a base plate saving the juice is more difficult but can be done by fitting a small plastic dish on top of the base-plate.

Place one hand beneath the circular cap and pull the chisel mechanism up against the spring pressure far enough to fit the nut in.

Locate the nut carefully on the cushion of the base-plate. (Direct contact between shell and the metal base-plate may cause a jagged break in the shell.) Ensure that the cutting tool blade rests on the centre of the top of nut, ensuring a split into equal halves. Both ends of the tool blade must be in contact with the shell.

A small nut (330 mm circumference or less) will require a 15 to 20 mm thick wooden insert (supplied) fitted on top of the base plate so that the splitting mechanism travels the required distance to achieve a complete split. It is important that the circular cap is at least 40 mm above the top edge of the guide tube when the nut is loaded. Be careful not to hammer the mechanism if there is not sufficient clearance. This is when the base-plate insert should be used.

Use a large hammer if possible so that one blow will split the nut completely. Note that the nut has a rubber band placed around it to restrain the two halves during the split.

Dry-shelled (imported) nuts from the market are hardest to split, and those with a thick shell require an extra hammer blow.

Nuts larger than 440mm circumference (which are rare) cannot be fitted into the splitter.

Avoid striking the splitter cap a second time if it has reached the top of the guide tube.

Never strike the splitter if the blade is not centrally located on the top of the nut, to avoid twisting the splitter arm.

Note that the splitter head is inserted between the two half nuts. The head is thick enough to ensure in most cases that the half nuts separate completely.

Careful placement of the nut before lowering the blade onto it allows precision splitting, which makes available very neat half shells after the kernel has been removed. These shells can be polished attractively to be used as cups, bowls, scoops or ornaments.

Occasionally you may split a nut that already has one or two fine cracks in the shell. This will result in a jagged split that is unavoidable

The kernel is now accessible for slicing or shredding, and the juice has been recovered.


Cocosplit is especially designed for those who do not have opportunity to practice splitting with a machete. The half-nuts are readily managed for slicing or shredding the kernel for making delicious coconut cream or adding to salads, and many other uses.
